The power of photography

What is it about photography that intrigues me?

For one thing, I love that photography allows us to be somewhere we otherwise couldn't be. In viewing photographs, I can be on the other side of the world, or, even, outside of our world, or, I can be underneath the Olympic snowboarder looking up at a fantastic trick during a gold medal performance.

Second of all, I love that photography allows us to visit another time. We all look in awe at photos of 'young' grandma. "Wow, you really looked nice Gran!", we say. Or, we look in disgust at the bloodsheds of the world wars, speechless. How excited do we get when we find a treasure box full of old photos that has been hidden away for years and that must immediately be reviewed by the whole family?

Thirdly, I love that photography allows us to edit an image. With current technology, we can invent our own images. Travel photos no longer need to have unwanted tourists in them, simply edit them out. Landscapes will always have a spectacular sky because we can add clouds or sunsets to them.

Photography has changed tremendously since its invention less than two hundred years ago. It has allowed us to capture times and places and is now allowing us create imaginative effects in pictures. What impact do the images that we take have on us? What is their significance? How are we affected by them? How do these images influence us?
